The island of Ischia is a volcanic -tectonic Horst, i.e. a complex structure formed by a series of lifted and inclined clods ,of which the Epomeo Mountain is the highest part of the central clod, inclined towards South-East. These slabs of the earth crust differentely disposed were deposited in times past with volcanic material here we can find mostly the green tufa. The reason of this particular composition were the magma pushes, which happened 30/40 thousand years ago (during the formation period of the Italian mountains called "Appennino") these phenomena raised and crashed the crust in various blocks.
In geological recent times new faultages opened in particular on the North-East sides of the island. In this periods alternated quiescence moments, when the erosion formed grouping made of clays and sands, to moments of volcanic activity when the incandenscent ejections covered the ground and soldered more or less strongly.
Today are still present bradyseism phenomena, i.e. slow clods movements of the earth crust and there are alternated phases of elevation and lowering during long periods (about every 50 years of these phases alternate).
The thermal waters are the witness of the slow cooling of the magma basin of ther subsoil of the island.
